En el caso de carreras elevadas, se debe tener en cuenta el fenómeno de inestabilidad del vástago por carga de punta.
El vástago, sometido a una fuerza de compresión directa a lo largo del eje, tiende a flectar y resiste hasta una carga máxima, superada la cual sufre una deformación permanente.
La elección del vástago depende de 4 factores: diámetro del vástago, modo de fijación del cilindro, carrera del cilindro y carga (empuje) del cilindro.
